With his background in organisational behaviour/occupational psychology and his many years' experience of improvement programmes in various sectors (including Rolls Royce), Simon is able to support clients across the full spectrum of activities necessary for success. Such activities might well range from structuring an improvement programme and determining priorities, through to developing the right culture and leadership team.

Mike Salt
Mike is an experienced assessor, internal verifier/IQA and EQA (External Quality Assurer) and he covers a range of Supervisory, Leadership & Management qualifications up to and including Level 7 (with an equivalence to Master’s Degree). He also covers the TAQA range of qualifications, including Learning & Development, assessor and verifier qualifications. His other areas of expertise include customer service, business administration, health & safety and he takes personal responsibility for the BIT's programmes and Levels 2 and 3..
 
In his role as the Centre Manager for CMBD, Mike is responsible for the quality assurance, policies and procedures and the training of the assessors and tutors in delivering Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualifications programmes from Level 2 Team Leader up to Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership..

About the programme:                    

The Level 2 Business Improvement Techniques programme (known commonly as BIT’s) is an excellent way to provide a basic level of skill and knowledge to employees and is also a highly effective way of improving business processes quickly and sustainably.
 

The programme consists of a combination of classroom teaching and work-place observation days over a three to six-month period and is largely project based. This means that actual work-place improvements are identified and recommended as part of the programme and that particular areas can be focused on if required. The programme is generally held on-site and is suitable for six to twelve participants. Contrary to popular belief, BIT’s programmes are highly effective in all types of work situations and not just for manufacturing scenarios. They can be equally effective in administration, sales and service delivery environments.
 

The tutor will hold an introductory day on site to brief the learners, form project groups, agree targets and the work processes that will be looked at (including any previously identified as part of the organisation’s requirements). There will then usually be six days on site (normally two to three weeks apart) during which the tutor will hold both classroom and individual work-place sessions to support the participants in their projects. This will contribute towards the completion of the qualification, a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Business Improvement Techniques. There will then be a final wrap-up day where the tutor will ensure that all work is completed and acceptable for submission to City and Guilds and will also review the learning and ongoing actions required.
Whilst the classroom sessions cover certain mandatory topics, there is the flexibility to tailor the course to suit the circumstances. The core subjects covered are as follows;

- Compliance with regulations and health and safety requirements

Effective team working

- Reducing costs

- Analysis and problem solving

- Applying workplace organisation techniques

To gain the NVQ, participants will need to show that they have a particular set of skills. They will work with the tutor to review their current skills and find the best way to gain new ones. For each unit, the tutor will watch and ask questions as they perform a task or look at the portfolio of work that will arise as a result of completing the various projects in the work-place.

The benefits to the employer are skilled and motivated employees who will make continual improvements whilst the participants gain a recognised Level 2 qualification and enhanced skill set.

Designed for:

The programme is designed as an introduction to BIT’s for all workplace environments, including administration, sales, service and manufacturing and suits all level of employee. A typical scenario would be a group of employees looking at the way they work, the processes involved and working in small groups on projects that will actually make a difference in the organisation. People taking part are provided with an opportunity to examine work processes and recommend improvements for implementation.

The course is fun, hands-on and practical. We will look at some very basic theories from time to time, but it is more about things that can be done back in the work-place that will make a difference. Most people also discover (if they did not already know it) that a lot of the course is about simple common sense and that participants will often be able to help others on the course from their own experience.         

Supervisors and first line managers can also complete a Level 3 BIT’s programme at the same time if required, helping the Level 2 participants whilst increasing their own knowledge and skills in this area.

The Programme content:

This programme is usually delivered and assessed over a three to six months in the workplace and uses a mix of classroom time and project based work to cover the six key areas that are most relevant to the Business Improvement process:

- Unit 201 - How to apply health and safety to safe working practices
        - Comply with statutory and organisational safety requirements
        - Know how to comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements

- Unit 202 – contributing to effective team working
        - Contribute to effective team working
        - Establish good working relationships with team members
        - Communicate effectively

Unit 203 – contribute to the application of workplace organisation techniques
        - Make recommendations for changes to existing or proposed working practices
        - Demonstrate how improvements can be measured

- Unit 204 –Contribute to continuous improvement techniques (Kaizen)
        - Make recommendations to improve quality or reduce costs
        - Identify and apply improvements
        - Record improvements

- Unit 205 – Contribute to the development of visual management systems
        - Develop a method of visual management in the workplace
        - Make recommendations to standard operating procedures

- Unit 210 – Contributing to the application of problem solving techniques
        - Identify the root cause of problems in the workplace
        - Provide suggestions for solving the problems

Further information and fees:

The programme is very flexible and is usually delivered in-house. The programme is designed for six to twelve delegates and can include some bespoke content to suit your organisation if required. We recommend that the course be over a three-month period with visits every 2 to 3 weeks. Please feel free to discuss the most suitable timings for your organisation.

The programme fee is £1295.00 plus VAT per delegate and this includes the City and Guilds registration and tutor support for the qualification (minimum 6 delegates).

The qualification aspect can cause apprehension for some delegates on the course. CMBD are well aware of this and are very skilled in supporting and reassuring anyone who might be in this position. We are recognised as being exceptional in supporting learners and an example of best practice in this area.
